Definition of Rank

  • Rank 1 is a one-dimensional parameter
  • Rank 2 is a two-dimensional parameter
  • Rank 0 is a one-dimensional parameter describing the second dimension of a two-dimensional parameter (e.g. bin depths for moored ADCP data)

Problem Reports

No Problem Report Found in the Database

Quality Control Report

Pressure and depth data appear to be in generally good order, but are subject to occasional, small discontinuities, consistent with vertical displacements of the mooring up to about 10 cm. Variability on either side of these discontinuities seems to be unaffected, but users should take care when analysing the series as a whole. Temperature data, where available, appear to be in generally good order.

Data Access Policy

Public domain data

These data have no specific confidentiality restrictions for users. However, users must acknowledge data sources as it is not ethical to publish data without proper attribution. Any publication or other output resulting from usage of the data should include an acknowledgment.

The recommended acknowledgment is

Narrative Documents

Aanderaa Water Level Recorder Model 7

The Water Level Recorder (WLR) model 7 is a self-contained, high precision instrument specifically designed for recording of ocean water levels through precise measurement of hydrostatic pressure. The WLR records pressure, temperature and conductivity (optional) at regular intervals, enabling precise variations in water level to be calculated. The pressure sensor consists of an oscillating quartz crystal which shifts frequency with the force applied to it. Temperature is measured by a Fenwall thermistor.

The data from the WLR7 are stored in a solid-state data storage unit (DSU) which can store up to 65,500 ten bit, PDC-4 coded words in a set of EEPROMS. Click the link for further details on theWLR7.

BODC Processing

Data were received in ASCII format files. Pressure offsets were applied to the data where indicated as necessary by the originator. The series were transferred to BODC's in-house format. The following table shows how the variables within the file were mapped to the appropriate BODC parameter codes.

Original parameter name Original Units BODC Parameter Code BODC Units Comments
Pressure decibars PREXPS01 decibars
Depth m DEPHFP01 m Not derived for all moorings
Temperature °C TEMPPR01 °C Not measured at all moorings

Following reformatting, the data were visually screened. Any data considered suspect were flagged accordingly. Flags from the originator's quality control were retained during transfer.

Originator's Data Processing

Marine Scotland applied the standard manufacturers' calibrations to all water level recorder (WLR) data and produced ASCII files for submission to BODC. Data files (.hmo) were named according to the mooring code and the instrument number. Files contained water level data in decibars or meters. Header metadata were collated in additional files (.frm).
