Definition of Rank

  • Rank 1 is a one-dimensional parameter
  • Rank 2 is a two-dimensional parameter
  • Rank 0 is a one-dimensional parameter describing the second dimension of a two-dimensional parameter (e.g. bin depths for moored ADCP data)

Problem Reports

Quality Control Report

Occasionally, for short periods, temperature and salinity signals are obscured by noise. Clear spikes have been flagged, but it is not always noise from genuine variability, and BODC quality control aims to err on the side of flagging too little rather than too much.

Temperature data from Marine Scotland moorings 801/2, 801/3 and 801/6 (BODC series references 1167037, 1167049, 1167062, respectively) were logged at 0.01°C precision, rather than the 0.001°C expected for the parameter. Otherwise, these temperature data show clear agreement with the higher precision temperature record from the same site.

Data Access Policy

Public domain data

These data have no specific confidentiality restrictions for users. However, users must acknowledge data sources as it is not ethical to publish data without proper attribution. Any publication or other output resulting from usage of the data should include an acknowledgment.

The recommended acknowledgment is

Narrative Documents

Vemco Minilog8 TR temperature logger

The VEMCO Minilog8-TR is a miniature data logger that records temperature at a user programmed time interval. It is housed in a waterproof cylinder and the temperature sensor is mounted on a protruding stainless steel probe.

Specifications

Memory 16 or 64k memory size, approximately 8000 readings stored in non-volatile Electrically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory (EEPROM). Logging duration is between 1 second to 6 hours for up to 5 years depending on the logging interval.
Data Retention 20 years.
Temperature Range -5 to 40 °C; 0.1-0.2 °C resolution; ±0.2-0.3 °C accuracy with factory calibration.
Maximum Depth 680 m
Communication Link Infrared LED. No external connections are required. Full memory downloads in 3 to 6 minutes.
Battery Internal lithium battery with life of up to 5 years or up to 700- 1000 full deployments.

Further details can be found in the manufacturer's specification sheet.

BODC Processing

Data were received in ASCII format files. The series were transferred to BODC's in-house format. The following table shows how the variables within the file were mapped to the appropriate BODC parameter codes.

Original parameter name Original Units BODC Parameter Code BODC Units Comments
Pressure decibars PREXPR01 decibars Not recorded at all moorings
Temperature °C TEMPPR01 °C
Salinity ppt PSALPR01 Dimensionless Not recorded at all moorings

Following transfer to QXF, the data were visually screened using in house BODC software. Any data considered as suspect were flagged accordingly. The originator's quality control flags were retained during transfer.

Originator's Data Processing

Marine Scotland applied the standard manufacturers' calibrations to all data and produced ASCII files for submission to BODC. Data files (.hmo) were named according to the mooring code and the instrument number. The file contained pressure and/or temperature. Salinity data, where available, were contained in a file appended 's'. Header metadata were collated in an additional file (.frm).

Marine Scotland mooring (801), Stonehaven Long Term Monitoring position

The mooring was located at 56° 57.89' N, 02° 06.81' W in a nominal water depth of 43m.

The mooring was deployed on 07 May 2011 by Marine Scotland during RV Scotia cruise 0511S. The mooring was recovered early as the surface marker parted from the instrument line. Instrumentation details are included in the following table.
