SIMORC TOTAL Australia ICHTHYS - ADCP Data Narrative
Narrative
Ten ADCP were deployed on ten moorings.
Data Quality Information
The following data quality checks were applied
- Changes in direction of over 45 degrees over consecutive datacycles were flagged suspect.
- Speeds stuck at zero for more than 1 consecutive datacycle were flagged suspect.
The ADCP data were found to be of good quality although the the shallowest bin did show repeated occurrences of zero speeds recorded for several consecutive datacycles. These were flagged suspect.
Data Access Policy
SIMORC data access conditions
The data collated and held at BODC on behalf of the SIMORC project are restricted. However, the data will be available to download from the Official SIMORC Website, as part of the project protocol. The data set will initially include data from the oil companies TOTAL, Shell and BP.

BODC Processing
Data were received by BODC in Excel files. There were converted to MATLAB files (.mat). Analysis of the .mat files showed systematic timestamp duplication between the 1st and 01:00 a.m. and 02:00 a.m. on the December 3rd 2006. For each of the 4 datafiles, 6 datacycles were affected. For the first 3 datacycles, all associated data was set to NaN. The 3 final datacylcles were deleted. After that, all the datafiles were reformatted to QXF format using BODC transfer function 524. The following table shows how the variables within the files were mapped to the appropriate BODC parameter codes:
Original parameter name | Original Units | Description | BODC Parameter Code | BODC Units | Comments |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Time | DD-MM-YYYY hh:mm:ss | Date and time (GMT+8) | AADYAA01 + AAFDZZ01 | Day number and day fraction (GMT) | |
CurSpd | m/sec | Speed in depth bin | LCSAAP01 | cm/sec | |
CurDir | degrees True | Direction in depth bin | LCDAAP01 | degrees True | |
Bin height | metres | Bin height | AADYAA01 | metres |
Following transfer to QXF, the data were screened using BODC's in-house visualisation software, EDSERPLO.
Originator's Data Processing
Data processing
Data were processed and quality controlled by Inpex Browse Ltd as follows:
- Data was adjusted from magnetic to true north using a magnetic variation of 2.7°E.
- The accuracy of the recorded data timing wad checked by comparing the elapsed deployment time according to the instrument clock, with that according to the calibrated digital watch. All instruments have performed (+/- 2 seconds by day), no timing corrections were performed.
- ADCP's data were removed by selecting 75% good pings threshold.
- Finally, time history checks were produced and quality controlled by an oceanographer prior to and after the removal of suspicious and corrupted data.
Project Information
System of Industry Metocean data for the Offshore and Research Communities (SIMORC)
The EU-funded SIMORC project is a collaborative effort between MARIS (Netherlands), BODC (UK), the International Association of Oil and Gas Producers (OGP) and IOC-IODE to provide a harmonised and quality controlled metocean data set from data collected by oil and gas producers, accessible through the SIMORC protocol.
