Data quality report for Marine Scotland temperature recorder moorings
During BODC quality control, data were screened using in house visualisation software. The data were screened and any obvious outliers and spikes were looked at in closer detail and flagged if necessary. There were no data quality comments provided by the originator.
The start and end of series 1879673 have been flagged in the TEMPPR01 channel as the periods are approximately 2°C higher than the rest of the series which is likely due to the deployment and recovery of the mooring. A 'M' flag was also added to a cycle in the PSALPR01 channel in series 1879685 where the value was low for this parameter, particularly when comparing to the rest of the series.

Narrative Documents
Sea-Bird SBE 37-SM MicroCAT
The SBE 37-SM MicroCAT is a high accuracy conductivity and temperature recorder (pressure optional). Designed for moorings and other long-duration, fixed-site deployments, MicroCATs have non-corroding titanium housings rated for operation to 7000 metres or pressure sensor full scale-range. Communication with the MicroCAT is over an internal, 3-wire, RS-232C link. The MicroCAT's aged and pressure-protected thermistor has a long history of exceptional accuracy and stability (typical drift is less than 0.002° per year). Electrical isolation of the conductivity electronics eliminates any possibility of ground-loop noise.

BODC Processing
Data were received in ASCII format files. The series were transferred to BODC's in-house format. The following table shows how the variables within the file were mapped to the appropriate BODC parameter codes.
Original parameter name | Original Units | BODC Parameter Code | BODC Units | Comments |
---|---|---|---|---|
Pressure | decibars | PREXPS01 | decibars | Not recorded at all moorings |
Temperature | °C | TEMPPR01 | °C | |
Salinity | PSU | PSALPR01 | Dimensionless | Not recorded at all moorings |
Following transfer to QXF, the data were visually screened using in house BODC software. Any data considered as suspect were flagged accordingly. The originator's quality control flags were retained during transfer.
Originator's Data Processing
Marine Scotland applied the standard manufacturers' calibrations to all data and produced ASCII files for submission to BODC. Data files (.hmo) were named according to the mooring code and the instrument number. The file contained pressure and/or temperature. Salinity data, where available, were contained in a file appended 's'. Header metadata were collated in an additional file (.frm).

MASTS Whale-Bone Lander
As part of the Marine Alliance for Science and Technology for Scotland (MASTS), an experiment into the colonisation of whale bones in the deep sea was conducted. Oceanlab's Deep Ocean Benthic Observer (DOBO) lander was modified to carry the skull of a minke whale and deployed at 1,800 m on in the Rockall trough. In addition to the whale skull, the lander (a pyramid frame) was loaded with current meters, depth sensors, temperature recorders and time-lapse cameras which took images every six hours. The lander was left at the site for a year with the aim to record and monitor the colonisation of the skull by the bone eating worm Osedax.
