DY086 COMICS 75 kHz Shipboard ADCP Originator Data Processing

The following was taken from the JC086 cruise report. For more detailed information please refer to the cruise report.

The 75kHz Ocean Surveyor ADCP was operated throughout the DY086 cruise to measure the horizontal velocity field and is situated on the hull of the RRS Discovery. The data were acquired from the instrument using Version 1.48 of the RDI VMDAS software.

ADCP setup

Variable Setting
Number of Bins 100
Bin size 8m
Blanking distance 8m
Transducer depth 6.6m
Processing mode Narrowband single ping profile mode.
Maximum range 800m

Post-processing

The final processing of data was done using the University of Hawaii CODAS (Common Ocean Data Access System) System. The main steps that characterize CODAS processing include the removal of the the ship velocity, correction of the gyro heading with GPS-derived heading, estimation of the heading misalignment and manual inspection/editing of bad data.

Calibration

The water track calibration was derived during CODAS processing and the details are as follows:

Median Mean STD
amplitude 1.0010 1.0008 0.0069
phase -0.0430 -0.0789 0.3446

DY086 COMICS Vessel Mounted ADCP data: BODC Processing

The data arrived at BODC in one CODAS formatted NetCDF file, representing the data collected from the vessel mounted ADCP during cruise DY086. The data were reformatted to BODC's internal NetCDF format.

The following table shows the mapping of the originator's variables, from the original data file, to the appropriate BODC parameter codes:

Originator's Variable Originator's Units BODC Parameter Code BODC Units Comment
lat degrees_north ALATGP01 Degrees -
lon degrees_east ALONGP01 Degrees -

vship meter second-1 APNSGP01 cm/s Conversion *100 applied
u meter second-1 LCEWAS01 cm/s Conversion *100 applied
v meter second-1 LCNSAS01 cm/s Conversion *100 applied
depth m DBINAA01 m -
heading degrees - - Not transferred
amp db - - Not transferred
pg % - - Not transferred
tr_temp Celsius - - Not transferred

The reformatted data were visualised using the in-house EDSERPLO software. Suspect data were marked by adding an appropriate quality control flag, missing data by both setting the data to an appropriate value and setting the quality control flag.

Parameters found in the originator's file, that were not transferred, are available upon request.

Project Information

Controls over Ocean Mesopelagic Interior Carbon Storage: COMICS

COMICS is a four-year collaborative research project that aims to quantify the flow of carbon in the ocean?s ?twilight? zone in order to accurately model global climate change. This ?twilight? zone is the part of the ocean between 100m and 1000m below the sea surface, where only a small amount of light from the sun can still penetrate.

By investigating carbon dynamics in the ocean interior, COMICS will help to improve predictions of future global climate change.

The COMICS project is led by the National Oceanography Centre and is a collaboration between the British Antarctic Survey and the universities of Queen Mary London, Liverpool, Oxford and Southampton. The project received funding from the Natural Environmental Research Council and runs between April 2017 and 2021.
