Definition of Rank

  • Rank 1 is a one-dimensional parameter
  • Rank 2 is a two-dimensional parameter
  • Rank 0 is a one-dimensional parameter describing the second dimension of a two-dimensional parameter (e.g. bin depths for moored ADCP data)

Narrative Documents

Vemco Minilog8 TR temperature logger

The VEMCO Minilog8-TR is a miniature data logger that records temperature at a user programmed time interval. It is housed in a waterproof cylinder and the temperature sensor is mounted on a protruding stainless steel probe.

Specifications

Memory 16 or 64k memory size, approximately 8000 readings stored in non-volatile Electrically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory (EEPROM). Logging duration is between 1 second to 6 hours for up to 5 years depending on the logging interval.
Data Retention 20 years.
Temperature Range -5 to 40 °C; 0.1-0.2 °C resolution; ±0.2-0.3 °C accuracy with factory calibration.
Maximum Depth 680 m
Communication Link Infrared LED. No external connections are required. Full memory downloads in 3 to 6 minutes.
Battery Internal lithium battery with life of up to 5 years or up to 700- 1000 full deployments.

Further details can be found in the manufacturer's specification sheet.

BODC processing

The data were provided to BODC in ascii format and were transferred to qxf format by BODC produced Matlab transfer 325.

The variables were then mapped to the appropriate BODC parameter code which can be seen below:

Variable Units BODC parameter code Units Comments
Temperature deg C TEMPTC01 deg C -

Following the transfer the data were screened using the BODC in-house visualisation software, EDSERPLO. Any suspect data points were flagged with the appropriate BODC flag code.

Originator's data processing

The data from the Vemco Miniloggers were merged to form "pseudo" thermistor chain records prior to being supplied to BODC.

FRS applied the standard manufaturers' calibrations to all data, and produced ascii files for submission to BODC.

FRS moored Vemco Minilogger from Wee Bankie

Multiple mounted Vemco miniloggers were deployed by Fisheries Research Services (FRS) in Wee Bankie (56.24967° N, 1.25133° W) on 08/03/01 as part of the Clupea 0401c cruise, and recovered on 23/05/01 by the Clupea 0701c cruise. The station had a nominal water depth of 62 m. The instruments had a sampling period of 10 minutes. The instruments were deployed as part of a thermistor chain at discrete depths of: 1 m, 5 m, 10 m, 15 m, 20 m, 30 m, 35 m, 50 m.

The mooring 655T consisted of the following instruments.
