Narrative Documents
Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft Bathysonde CTD profiler
A self-contained conductivity-temperature-pressure profiler developed in the 1970s. The unit could be equipped with a remotely controlled Nansen bottle and thermometer frame to provide water samples and independent temperature measurements. Data were digitised in the underwater unit by means of a set of mechanical relays, thereby limiting the sampling frequency to <2 Hz. Pressure and conductivity were sampled simultaneously, while temperature was subject to a 60 ms delay in order to correct for the sensor time constant.
Specifications
Pressure | Temperature | Conductivity | |
---|---|---|---|
Range | 800 or 6000 dbar | unknown | 0 to 80 mmho cm-1 |
Precision | ± 0.25% of total range | ± 0.01 °C | ± 1.5 ‰ |
Resolution | 1 dbar or better | 0.01 °C | 0.01 mmho cm-1 |
FS Meteor Cruise 36 STD Data Documentation
Introduction
Documentation for STD data collected on FS Meteor 36 (January - February 1975) by the Institute fur Meereskunde, Kiel, Federal Republic of Germany.
This was a cruise in conjunction with scientists on board the UK research ship RRS Discovery (Cruise 69). It was organised jointly by the Institute of Oceanographic Sciences and the University of Liverpool, Department of Oceanography in the UK and the Institute fur Meereskunde, Kiel, Germany.
Instrumentation
The instrument used was a Bathysonde Salinity-Temperature-Depth system.
Calibration and Data Processing
The calibrations curves for the Bathysonde were determined to be:
- T(true) = 1.00875 * T(obs) - 0.0534 °C
- C(true) = 1.00514 * C(obs) - 0.2185 mmho/cm
These were based on a few water bottle casts only, performed for the purpose of calibration. After calibration against the water bottle observations the STD data were despiked, smoothed and interpolated to 2m depth intervals.
Sampling
Stations were identified by their 4 digit station number.
Caution
For the following 3 stations the water depth given was less than the maximum depth of the instrument by more then 10 per cent. The water depths has been set null in the series header, but their values are noted below:
Station | Water depth | Maximum Instrument Depth |
---|---|---|
3663 | 49m | 56m |
3664 | 34m | 44m |
3683 | 85m | 94m |
