Aanderaa Recording Doppler Current Profiler (RDCP 600)
The RDCP 600 is a medium range, 600 kHz self-recording Doppler Current Profiler. The standard RDCP 600 can be deployed to a depth of 300 m, with a velocity range of 0-500 cm/s, vertical velocity accuracy of 1.0 cm s-1 and horizontal velocity accuracy of 0.5cm s-1. Standard parameters include current speed and direction, temperature, signal strength and instrument tilt. Optional parameters include oxygen, turbidity, conductivity, pressure and wave parameters. The instruments has several possible applications for example it may be moored at the bottom in a fixed frame, in an inline mooring string looking upwards or downwards, or it may be installed on a buoy system or at a quay looking downwards.
The RDCP 600 employs an advanced tilt compensation algorithm to achieve true horizontal current measurements even when the instrument is tilted.
Further details can be found in the manufacturer's specification sheet.
BODC Processing
Data were received by BODC in ASCII format files. The series were reformatted to the internal QXF format using BODC transfer function 325. The following table shows how the variables within the file were mapped to the appropriate BODC parameter codes.
Original parameter name | Original Units | Description | BODC Parameter Code | BODC Units | Comments |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Time | DD/MM/YYYY HH:MI | date and time | AADYAA01 and AAFDZZ01 | day number and day fraction GMT | Conversion by transfer |
u + v | cm/s | Eastward and northward current velocity | LCDAEL01 (direction) and LCSAEL01 (speed) | °, cm/s | Converted by transfer to current direction (Eulerian) in the water column by in-situ current meter and correction to true North, and current speed (Eulerian) in the water column by in-situ current meter |
Following transfer to QXF, the data were screened using BODC's in-house visualisation software, EDSERPLO. Any data considered as suspect were flagged 'M'. Flags from the originator marking suspect data were retained during transfer and flagged 'L'.
Originator's Data Processing
Sampling Strategy
The Aanderaa Recording Doppler Current Profiler deployed in Loch Ewe had a sampling frequency of 4 readings per hour.
Data Processing
FRS applied the standard manufacturers' calibrations to all data, and produced ASCII files for submission to BODC. Data files were named according to the mooring (748) and series number (1, 2 or 3, below). The data were supplied as quasi-current meter records at three discrete depths: series 7481 from 12 m; series 7482 from 28 m and series 7483 from 60 m. Each file contained eastward and northward velocities.

FRS bottom mounted Aanderaa Recording Doppler Current Profiler, Loch Ewe
The Aanderaa Recording Doppler Current Profiler (RDCP600) was located at 57° 48.52' N, 005° 37.59' W in a nominal water depth of 74 m.
The RDCP600 was deployed on 18 July 2007 by Research Services (FRS, now known as Marine Scotland Aberdeen Marine Laboratory) on cruise Glen Tarff 1907H (16 July 2007-20 July 2007) and recovered on 27 September 2007. Instrumentation details are included in the following table.
