Abstract

The data contained in this dataset refer to the ecophysiology of the cold-water ecosystem engineer Spongosorites coralliophaga. This is a massive sponge which is found in high density in parts of the North East Atlantic but information on its biology is almost absent. The data refer to oxygen consumption rates, production of dissolved inorganic 13C carbon (DI13C) and assimilation of carbon and nitrogen from isotopically-labelled sources (13C glucose, 15N ammonium chloride, 13C/15N microalgae, 13C/15N bacteria) to the bulk tissue and the hydrolysable amino acids (HAAs) of the cold-water sponge Spongosorites coralliophaga. The data were collected from experiments carried out during cruise JC073 on board the RRS James Cook in May and June 2012. The sponge samples were collected from the Mingulay Reef Complex (Outer Hebrides Sea) and Logachev Mound (Rockall Bank) in the North East Atlantic by the Remotely Operated Vehicle Holland I. The experiments were conducted during the cruise by Georgios Kazanidis. The data for oxygen consumption were generated by measuring the oxygen concentration in chambers with and without sponges. The data on carbon and nitrogen assimilation were generated after analysing the isotopic composition of specimens as well as their carbon and nitrogen content (this was carried out both for bulk tissue and amino acids). Data on the production of dissolved inorganic carbon were generated analysing water samples from the chambers for their inorganic carbon content and isotopic composition.
