Description
Summary

Measurements of the daily phytoplankton primary production were made 6-18 times per year at 2 stations in the Kattegat and Belt Sea, respectively, with the 14C-method. Until 1970 the measurements were made in situ from lightships; thereafter in artificial light incubators aboard research vessels with water samples from different depths within the euphotic zone. The data have been used to establish time series of yearly production or average production in the summer period July - September. These time series have shown an increase in the production from the 1950s to the end of the 1970s due to a general increase in nutrient (nitrate) load, and a further increase in the 1980s due to increased precipitation and land run off in the 1980s. Since 1975 about 10 stations in the Sound, Kattegat, Belt Sea and western Baltic Proper have been included in the programme. Chlorophyll-a has been measured since 1975.
