Aegean Sea (NE Mediterranean)

The seasonal and spatial distribution of particulate organic matter (POC, PON, ATP, chloroplastic pigments, carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, nucleic acids) in the water column of the Aegean Sea was determined during 3 sampling periods: March 97, Sept. 97 and March 98. Water samples were collected from standard depth layers (1, 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 75, 100, 120, 150, 200, 300, 400, 500, 700, 1000, 1200, 1500, 2000 and 2200 m) at 6 stations in the South Aegean Sea (900-2200 m depth) and 7 stations in the North Aegean Sea (95-1200 m depth). This study was part of the multidisciplinary EU MAST III MTP II project MATER (contract MAS3-CT96-0051) and was conducted in conjunction with the Institute of Marine Sciences of the University of Ancona and the Institute of Marine Environmental Sciences of the University of Genova.
