Coastal waters around Greece

Data have been collected within the framework of national and international research projects, aiming at improving the existing knowledge of the quality of the marine environment. More specifically, nutrient and dissolved oxygen data have been used in order to estimate the degree of eutrophication caused by discharges of domestic wastes or effluent from industries and consequently to enable the protection of the marine environment from pollution. Also, nutrient data together with other physical parameters have been used to provide assistance in determining water masses and water flows. Data have been collected using Nansen and NIO water sampling bottles and the data set comprises measurements made in a dense grid of stations at standard depths. The collection of data have been made in various coastal areas, as follows: Ionian Sea, Saronikos Gulf, Pagassitikos Gulf, Thermaikos Gulf, Maliakos Gulf, Amvrakikos Gulf, Lakonikos Gulf, North Euboikos Gulf, Gera Bay and Kalloni Bay (Lesvos Island), Corfu Island. All data have been provided to the HNODC from the Chemical Oceanographic Department of NCMR and will be formatted to MEDATLAS format and subjected to quality control.
