CTD

During 52 cruises in the Tyrrhenian, Aegean, Ionian and Levantine Seas CTD data were collected from an extensive grid of stations with almost nominal spacing of 0.5 degree in latitude and longitude. Occasionally, mesoscale resolution grids were occupied. The CTDs were equipped with new and/or calibrated pressure, temperature, conductivity and oxygen sensors. The measurements were taken at a rate of 33 scans/sec averaged in situ by software over one second intervals, thus obtaining values at about 0.7dbar intervals, followed by 3 point interpolation to nominal depths (every dbar). Post cruise calibration in CTD salinity was undertaken using water sample salinity measured by an AUTOSAL salinometer. Intercalibration of temperature and salinity carried out in some of the sub-sets, within the context of POEM programme. The research programme in the frame of which the data sets were gathered aimed towards the best understanding of the phenomenology and the dynamics of the seas of the Eastern Mediterranean. The cruises were conducted by Italy (26 cruises), Yugoslavia (3), Greece(7), Turkey (6), Israel (9) and Germany (1) and the number of stations that were visited during the projects is 3373.
