ProjectPELAGOS - Hydrodynamic and Biogeochemical Processes in the Strait of the Cretan Arc(PELAGOS)
Time periodMay 1994 to July 1995
OngoingNo
Geographical area

South Aegean Sea, Straits of the Cretan Arc

Observations
Parameters

Sedimentation flux quantification in the water column; Horizontal velocity of the water column (currents)

Instruments

Current meters; sediment traps

Description
Summary

Two arrays, each including two PPS3 traps and associated gear were deployed on either side of the strait between Crete and Antikithira Island with traps programmed to collect settling particles over a 2 week period. The associated current meters were set to measure currents on a 30 minutes basis. The main objectives are to obtain on a seasonal basis, quantitative and qualitative data on suspended particles as well as on downward particle fluxes and transport, to identify the origin of the flux responsible particles as well as the main flux carriers (biogenic vs lithogenic). A total of 74 samples were collected during PELAGOS project.
