Description | |
Summary | Biomass -abundance indices series and length frequency distributions of commercially important and other (decapodes and myctophids) demersal species of Argosaronikos and Ionian Sea (Greece). The data are collected in the framework of the MEDITS program (International Bottom Trawl Survey in the Mediterranean) partly financed by the EC. This project was designed to produce biological data, useful for the fishery management, on the demersal resources along the coasts of the four Mediterranean countries of the European Union. Its main objective was to get abundance indices comparable between the different studied areas. This has been made possible by the standardisation of the methodology (common protocols, same gear, common format for the computer files, etc). From 1994, 7 surveys have been conducted on an annual basis, which cover all the trawlable areas from 10 to 800 m of depth. The data have been stored in a common database specially elaborated for the project. At the end of each survey, abundance indices are calculated and length frequency distributions are produced, and a working group meets to provide a common analysis of the results for about 30 reference species (fishes, crustaceans and molluscs). |
