The aim of the project was the study of the pelagic food web structure and the carbon flow within it in two areas of the Aegean Sea: the very oligotrophic S.Aegean sea and the less oligotrophic N. Aegean sea. Samples were collected at 7 stations in the N.Aegean and at 6 stations in the S.Aegean at standard depths (or at different layers). Bacterioplankton, microzooplankton and mesozooplankton biomass and/or abundance were measured and the micro- and mesozooplankton community species composition was studied in the whole water column (down to 1000m). Phytoplankton biomass and production (size fractionated) were measured in the euphotic zone, as well as bacterial production, copepod production and grazing on phytoplankton.
