Data holding centre | Hellenic Centre for Marine Research, Institute of Oceanography |
Country | Greece |
Time period | 1996 - 2000 |
Ongoing | No |
Geographical area | Coastal and open sea regions of the Aegean and Ionian seas |
Observations | |
Parameters | Concentration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in sediment samples |
Instruments | Gas chromatograph mass spectrometers |
Description | |
Summary | Data have been collected within the framework of national and international research projects, aiming at improving the existing knowledge of the quality of the marine environment. Analyses have been performed in surface sediments collected from various coastal and open sea areas in Greece. Both aliphatic and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons have been determined by gas chromatography mass spectrometry in order to a) estimate the petroleum related pollution in the Greek seas b) study the biogeochemical cycles of the hydrocarbons c) estimate the concentration levels of the carcinogenic PAHs |
