Description
Summary

The KATERINA underwater system has been deployed between 2002 and 2007 in several regions in the Aegean Sea and in Amvrakikos Gulf. The measuring period was for 3h and the analysis has been performed using the SPECTRG software. The radionuclides are identified according to the emission energy and the volumetric activity is quantified using marine efficiency values measured in the laboratory. The deployments have been made in various coastal areas and at open sea as follows: In Saronikos Gulf, 3 seasonal cruises were conducted, during the period 2002-2007, in order to specify radon concentration after rainfall and due to groundwater discharges. In Thermaikos Gulf, 1 cruise was carried out at 2004 in order to detect pollution due to anthopogenic and/or natural radiation. In addition water samples were collected for intercalibration. In Amvrakikos Gulf, 1 cruise was carried out in 2007 for 214Bi and 214Pb detection due to enhanced natural radiation. In Euboikos Gulf, 2 cruises were conducted in 2004 and 2005 performing two deployments on submarine groundwater discharge. In Lesvos island 1 cruise was carried out in order to monitor the outflow of Dardanelles straits. In Messiniakos gulf 1 cruise was carried in order to specify the radon (222Rn) volumetric activity for estimate the quantity of water mass.
