Description
Summary

The aim of this project, which is part of the MED-POL/UNEP Mediterranean monitoring project, is to assess the levels and seasonal trends of dissolved and particulate metal concentrations in the Saronikos Gulf. 13-15 stations are sampled seasonally (4 times per year) and water samples are collected from 2 to 5 depth intervals depending on the maximum depth at each station. The samples are collected using GO-FLO water sampling bottles. The particulate phase is obtained after filtration through a 0.45 micrometer Millipore membrane filters. The filters are digested with conc. HNO3. The dissolved metals are preconcentrated on CHELEX-100 resin and the metals are eluded with 2N HNO3. Special care is taken to eliminate any contamination problems during analysis. Trace metal concentrations are determined by GFAAS. For the samplings of December 1987, June 1988, September 1989, December 1989 and March 1990 the data set includes only particulate metal concentrations. Also, for the samplings of June 1990, September 1990, December 1990 and May 1991 the data set includes only the stations within the Elefsis Gulf. There is a gap in the data set covering the period from autumn 1991 to spring 1992
