Description
Summary

The gridded data set has been produced from the UK Meteorological Office sea surface temperature data holdings. It comprises: 1. Monthly values of sea surface temperature anomaly from 1856 to date. Anomalies are with respect to 1951 to 1980 normals. The data are stored on a 5 ° x 5 ° grid in PP format; 2. Monthly normals for 1951 to 1980 on a 5 ° x 5 ° grid. Data are from in-situ data only. The coverage improves after 1940. The data are regularly updated and improved, when additional historical data are discovered and added to the data banks. In 1995 the normals period is due to be changed to 1961 to 1990.
