Microbiological database contains data on total bacterioplankton abundance (1997-2002) and biomass (only in 1997) and also on abundance of saprophytic bacteria in seawater at the coastal zone of the Gulf of Riga and also Latvian Baltic Sea coast. The sampling was performed with Van Dorn water sampler in the depth of 0.5 or 1 m from the surface. Collection of the samples was fulfilled from May till September, i.e. during the intensive period of bathing and also of phytoplankton growth. Total bacterioplankton abundance was determined by counting on stained filters and then calculated per litre, saprophytic bacteria were cultured for a week in an agar-agar medium and then colonies counted and calculated per litre. Data on total abundance of Escherichia coli and abundance of faecal coliforms in seawater were collected only in 1997 from May till September at the coastal zone of the Gulf of Riga and Latvian Baltic Sea coast. The sampling was performed with Van Dorn water sampler in the depth of 0.5 or 1 m from the surface. The further analysis was carried out at National Health Agency according to ISO methods.
