Description
Summary

MED POL Phase III is the pollution reduction and control programme for the Mediterranean Action Plan. Monitoring activities is an essential module of MED POL Phase III to track the efficiency of policy measures taken to reduce and control of pollution and as well to assess the status of the marine environment. The objectives of the monitoring activities are: - to present periodical assessments of the state of the environment in hot spots and coastal areas (needed to provide information for decision makers on the basic environmental status of the areas which are under anthropogenic pressures); - to determine temporal trends of some selected contaminants in order to assess the effectiveness of actions and policy measures, and - to enhance the control of pollution by means of compliance to national/international regulatory limits. According to monitoring agreement monitoring data are periodically (yearly) reported to the MED POL Unit in standardized formats.
