Description
Summary

The Project of Restoration of the Degraded Sea-environment of the Puck Lagoon was based on research carried out by the DAE IEP together with some cooperating institutes in 1986-1989. The present state of the environment and the degree of degradation of the environment components were studied. A number of pioneer experiments in the Puck Lagoon was performed. As a result, an elaboration on biotechnical and sociotechnical measures, aimed at the improvement of the biocenosis and the environment of the Puck Lagoon, was presented. The following environmental parameters were controlled in 1987 at 13 sampling stations in the Puck Lagoon: surface sediments - type, thickness, aromatic organic fraction; heavy metals in sediments, water, plants and animals; chlorophyll-a, phytoplankton, zooplankton and zoobenthos. Additionally phytobenthos at 28 stations (including 5 sampling profiles, each 400m long) was studied. The input of the substance from the atmosphere was also estimated. The data set contains abundance and biomass of the organisms recalculated for 1 m**3 in the case of pelagic parameters and for 1 m**2 of the bottom in the case of macrozoobenthos. The other values are expressed in standard units. Experiments concerning reintroduction of selected plant species, overgrowing of artificial substrata, establishing artificial spawning sites, removing the 'unfavourable for the environment' filamentous brown algae by means of a prototype of a specially engineered device, were conducted at 4 stations in 1988-1989. The database contains the results of the experiments as well as measurements of: water temperature, salinity, water transparency, oxygen, nitrates and phosphorus in water, sedimentation of organic matter, redox potential, pH, organic carbon, aromatic organic fraction, organic matter and heavy metal concentrations in bottom sediments, bacterioplankton and pathogenic microorganisms. DAE IEP also owns the documentation of these experiments in the underwater photography form. The methods of sampling and sample analyses used were in accordance with international and national guidelines.
