Description
Summary

Since 1993 a research project on intensification of the self- purification processes in the sea environment has been carried out. The main objective of the project was to apply biotechnical measures (like artificial substrata) for the biofiltrators communities. The research and the environmental experiments were carried out in one of the most polluted parts of the Gulf of Gdansk in the close vicinity of the outfall sewer from the municipal sewage treatment plant. In 1993 a biological and physico-chemical monitoring of water and the bottom sediments at 16 sampling stations in the area of the planned experiment was accomplished. In June and September 1994 and in August 1995, supplementary physico-chemical analyses of water and sediments were carried out, as well as microbiological sanitary analyses of water, sediments and bivalves tissue; number and biomass of the epiphytic organisms; number of planktonic larvae of the bottom invertebrates; morphometric measurements and population surveys of the bivalve Mytilus edulis. The results of the research and analyses in the form of source data, as well as mean values and statistical analyses, are at the disposal of the DAE IEP. The data set, in the form of computer files, consists of about 260 physico-chemical analyses, 265 biological analyses and some 900 morphometric measurements of the bivalves done in 1993-94. The material from 1995 is being analysed at present. The experiments were also documented in the form of underwater video-film.
