The aim of the observations of the water level is to deliver information for storm surge forecasting purposes as well as for flood protection. Data are also used for numerical modelling and other studies. The water level data are included from 10 sites along the Polish coast in the open sea area (sea level data): 4 sites along the Vistula River close to the mouth, 5 sites in the Vistula Lagoon area and 1 site in the Stettin Lagoon. These data have originated either from direct readings of water-level indicators or as digitised from analogue recordings from mechanical tide gauges. Direct readings have been made by an observer. The sites with analogue recordings have been instrumented with conventional stilling wells with mechanical recorders. Not all the stations are in operation at present so not every time series will be updated. Time series durations are different for each of the stations. Data from one station i.e. Gdanska Glowa (Vistula River station) cover the whole period since 1938 until 1992. Data from 4 stations have a gap during World War II, i.e. 1943-1946. Data for 13 stations cover the period since 1945/1946. One station has been in operation since 1971 and one since 1987. The frequency of measurements has been different at every station. There is at least one observation a day at a station. Besides digitised data which are stored on magnetic media, IMWM stores all paper analogue recordings from tide gauges. Each site has its unique identification number (ID). All digitised data are stored, together with their ID, as single records within one data set. In total the data from 22 locations are stored in an electronic database covering the period since 1946. Each record consists of an ID and 24 fields for hourly values of water level, with 1 cm accuracy relative to Amsterdam Sea Level 0. The data for 4 stations are completely quality controlled for gaps, peak values and reliability. Some missing values are interpolated on the basis of neighbouring stations with an accuracy of 5 cm in the case the period of break in no longer than 14 days. Those data are marked. Much of the data collected between 1945 and 1952 needs to be quality controlled.
