Description
Summary

The aim of the projects was to develop and implement modern measurement methods within routine oceanographic observations, as well as to study circulation phenomena in the Baltic Sea. Since February 1994, some ADCP measurements have been carried out at different depths during the research cruises of R/V Baltica in February, April, September and November of 1994 and in February, August and September of 1995 using a Furuno Current Indicator. During measurement periods 1 minute average values of current speed and direction were recorded every 15 seconds along horizontal profiles as well as at anchor stations, together with every second geographical position of the ship. Since the deployment of a brand new RDI BB ADCP in 1998, new data has been collected during routine cruises of IMWM. The data are collected both in the deep water as well as in the shallow area zones. These are 150 metre averages in the layers 2.5 to 10 metre thickness of current speed and direction. The current data are referenced to the sea bottom, while for the cruise track control the DGPS data are combined with the ADCP ones into one file, separately for each measuring campaign. The data are stored on magnetic media as raw data (originally recorded and averaged) in separate binary (RDI's) and ASCII files consisting of geographical positions and current speed and direction. This database has been developed for scientific purposes. The results have been quality checked against other current measurements during one of the POLRODEX experiments. Since 1998 the new Broadband ADCP device of RDI has been used.
