Description
Summary

Samples of herring were collected from the southern Baltic Sea (Subdivisions 24, 25 and 26) and Vistula Lagoon. Stratified random sampling was used with strata defined by host length, and usually 4-5 herrings were sampled for parasites at length. Generally 12 to 20 samples were collected a year, covering all quarters, and both in-shore and off-shore areas. The number of viable A. simplex larvae in the body cavity of the fish was recorded by macroscopic examination. The objective of this study was to analyse with a statistical model the influence of temporal, spatial and biological factors on the occurrence of larval A. simplex in herring. Generalized linear models (GLM's) were used to model the prevalence and intensity of herring infection as dependent on year, quarter, area, length, body condition factor, sex, and stage of gonad development.
