North-eastern part of the Puck Lagoon (ca 40 km**2) adjacent to Hel Peninsula (Southern Baltic)

Mineralogical composition; Sediment grain size parameters

The aim of the project was to study the quaternary geology of part of the Puck Lagoon adjacent to the Hel Peninsula; in particular to research sand accumulations for artificial beach nourishment of the Hel Peninsula. During August and September 1992, 11 boreholes of depths between 10 and 18m, and 38 cores of 3m length, were taken. The following analyses were done: granulometry - 441, morphology of quartz grains - 38, content and composition of heavy minerals - 26, derivatographic - 36, microfauna and macrofauna - 63, palynology - 14, diatoms - 47, radiocarbon ages - 11. Analysis of 14C was carried out in the Silesian Technical University. Diatoms were analyzed by A. Witkowski from Gdansk University. All other analyses were done in the Polish Geological Institute. The results of the investigations are presented in the report with the maps: documentation, bathymetric, surficial sediments, sediments 1m and 3m below sea bottom (1:25,000), 5 geological cross-sections, geological profiles and maps of sand fields available for exploitation.
