Description
Summary

The idea of SKAGEX came from ICES (International Council for the Exploration of the Sea). The Skagerrak between the Kattegat and the North Sea can be regarded as a transitional area. The anticlockwise water circulation in the North Sea takes a turn into the Skagerrak before leaving the North Sea. The Skagerrak also receives large quantities of water, mainly surface water, from the Baltic via the Kattegat. The objectives of the experiment were: - to identify and quantify the various water masses that enter and leave the Skagerrak area, and their variations over time; - to investigate the mechanisms that drive the circulation in the area, and its links with biological processes; - to investigate the pathways of contaminants through the Skagerrak. The data set comprises measurements (depth, temperature, conductivity, salinity) at several stations in the Skagerrak and the Baltic Sea and includes: 1990 - 78 stations in the Skagerrak; 1991 - 41 stations in the Skagerrak, 20 stations in the Baltic Sea.
