Description
Summary

The data set contains the extent of the largest annual ice cover in the Baltic Sea starting from the ice season 1719/1720. The time series is based on the material collected by R. Jurva (1720-1940) and the material of the ice service of the FIMR (1941-2003). Jurva collected ice information from several sources and reconstructed the extent of the largest annual ice cover in the Baltic Sea. The earliest extensions are estimates. Only after reconnaissance flight had become general in the 1920s and especially after satellites had come into general use in the last decades, it was possible to observe exactly the extent of ice cover. Time series is updated annually.
