Data holding centre | Finnish Environment Institute |
Country | Finland |
Project | Hydrodynamical control of cyanobacterial blooms in the Baltic Sea: the effect of small-scale turbulence. |
Time period | 12.- 24.7.1993 |
Ongoing | No |
Geographical area | Pilot grid stations and meso-scale surveys: area restricted by longitude 21° 50 min - 22° 40 min E and latitude 59° 05 min - 59° 21 min N. Biological-chemical samplings were made at five stations along transect 22° 12 min E. |
Observations | |
Parameters | Electrical conductivity of the water column; Chlorophyll pigment concentrations in water bodies; Wind strength and direction; Nitrate concentration parameters in the water column; Phosphate concentration parameters in the water column; Primary production in the water column; Salinity of the water column; Temperature of the water column; Phytoplankton taxonomic abundance in water bodies; Phytoplankton taxonomic biomass in water bodies |
Instruments | Fluorometers; CTD; discrete water samplers; salinity sensor; autoanalysers; liquid scintillation counters |
Description | |
Summary | The cruise started on 12-14 July with a pilot survey at 12 grid stations. Vertical profiles of CTD, nutrient samplings and semiquantitative analysis of phytoplankton were made. During 15-23 July and intensive meso-scale biological-chemical-physical study was carried out. This consisted of: a) Repeated every night mapping of meso-scale hydrodynamical and fluorescence fields with an undulating CTD and surface flow-through measurements (temperature, salinity, density) b) Daily biological and chemical investigations at 5 sampling stations along transect 22 ° 12 min E selected on the basis of the previous night's meso-scale survey. Biological measurements were made from an integrated sample representing the upper mixed layer. Special attention was paid on frontal dynamics in changing wind conditions. |
