Parameters | Chlorophyll pigment concentrations in water bodies; Wind strength and direction; Nitrate concentration parameters in the water column; Phosphate concentration parameters in the water column; Primary production in the water column; Salinity of the water column; Horizontal velocity of the water column (currents); Silicate concentration parameters in the water column; Temperature of the water column; Bacterial production in the water column; Phytoplankton taxonomic abundance in water bodies; Density of the water column; Phytoplankton taxonomic biomass in water bodies |
Instruments | Fluorometers; current profilers; CTD; CTD undulators; discrete water samplers; autoanalysers; optical microscopes; liquid scintillation counters; current meters |
Description | |
Summary | The study began with a large-scale pilot survey on 21-23 July, consisting of CTD casts, nutrient sampling, and a semi-quantitative analysis of the phytoplankton species composition at 20 stations covering an area of ca. 43x21 km. Between 23 July and 3 August an intensive study was carried out, involving night-time mesoscale CTD/ Chl a fluorescence mappings and day-time biological-chemical samplings at 4-5 stations located along a fixed cross-gulf transect at 23 ° 23 min E (23 ° 06 min E on 29 July). Special attention was paid on the development of a subsurface chlorophyll maximum and fine scale nutrient intrusions. |
