Project | Hydrodynamical control of cyanobacterial blooms in the Baltic Sea: the effect of small-scale turbulence. |
Time period | 19.-30. 7. 1999 |
Ongoing | No |
Geographical area | Meso-scale surveys: area restricted by longitude 23° - 24° E and latitude 59° 30 min - 59° 45 min N. Anchor station at 23° 38 min E, 59° 42 min N |
Observations | |
Parameters | Variable fluorescence parameters; Chlorophyll pigment concentrations in water bodies; Wind strength and direction; Nitrate concentration parameters in the water column; Phosphate concentration parameters in the water column; Primary production in the water column; Salinity of the water column; Horizontal velocity of the water column (currents); Silicate concentration parameters in the water column; Temperature of the water column; Turbulence in the water column; Phytoplankton taxonomic abundance in water bodies; Density of the water column; Phytoplankton taxonomic biomass in water bodies |
Instruments | Fluorometers; current profilers; CTD; CTD undulators; discrete water samplers; autoanalysers; liquid scintillation counters; microstructure sensors; current meters |
Description | |
Summary | The cruise consisted of four mesoscale surveys to obtain hydrographical background and three intensive biological-chemical study periods at an anchor station. The three surveys were carried out with towed undulating CTD/fluorometer and flow-through system and one with flow-through system. The flow-through system measured salinity, temperature, fluorescence and collected samples for nutrient and phytoplankton analyses at ca. 5 m depth. At the anchor stations measurements/samplings of turbulence, CTD, fluorescence, nutrients, phytoplankton, primary production, particle size distribution and in situ videomicroscopy were made. Special attention was paid on the upwelling event detected along the Finnish coast. |
