Description
Summary

The aim of the research is to evaluate water quality of the Curonian Lagoon according to organic substances which accumulate in the Lagoon. Biochemical consumption of oxygen within 7 days (BOD7) as an indirect indicator reflects the water body pollution by organic material. Because of eutrophication abundant organic substances (including plankton) accumulate and oxygen is used in oxidation of organic material. In accordance with the national Curonian Lagoon monitoring programme, the research of BOD7 from 1984 to 1992 was carried out every month (except winter months) in one station (coordinates: 5520.5' N and 2116.5' E) which is under the impact of river Nemunas, from 1993 to 2003 - at 12-13 stations at surface and bottom layers in the north part of the Lagoon which belongs to the Lithuania. Investigations are performed according to HELCOM methods. The data are fully quality controlled. Systematic certification of laboratories, participation in international intercalibrations, internal control, introduced managing system for research' quality, use of high quality reagents determine quality of data. All data is stored in archive (in table forms on paper) and is saved on hard disk.
