Description
Summary

Mira estuary: - Different sampling strategies were used (Eulerian and Lagragian approaches). - Objectives were to characterize the dynamics of the estuarine section of the Mira. - Fixed point surveys related to seasonal conditions and include parameters such as: T, salinity; turbidity; speed and direction of the current during 26 or 13 h cycles with 15 min sampling intervals, 1982-1984. - Longitudinal transects also include nutrient concentrations: NO2, NO3, NH3, Si, P, suspended solids (total and organic), pigments (chlorophyll and phaeopigments), bacteria counts (MA, PCA, total and faecal coliphorms and faecal streptococci). - Benthos (one intensive survey - 132 stations - survey was carried out along the whole estuary in a summer situation (1984). Porto Santo: - Intensive surveys following the Aragon oil spill were carried out on different sites along the island shoreline. - Parameters evaluated include: benthic populations (sand and hard substrates); coastal fish; water mass parameters; zooplankton; phytopigments. - Bacteria were evaluated in relation to: total densities; identification of isolates; oil degradation capacity.
