Description
Summary

To determine possible populations living along the Portuguese coast, several aspects on the biology were analyzed: a) morphological characterization, applying methods of univariate and multivariate statistics; b) age and growth studies, using direct reading on the otoliths and validated by the back-calculation technique; and c) gonadal development, sexual differentiation and annual sexual cycle. These results led to the conclusion that there is one population along the Portuguese coast. For stock assessment a VPA was used and their results allowed forecasts to be made on the capture and spawning biomass for the following years.
