Description
Summary

The Barreiro/Seixal Industrial Complex is the biggest industrial area in the Tagus estuary. Many industrial effluents are discharged into the waters without treatment. Monthly samples over a year were taken, 14 stations were sampled, (surface and bottom), for the physico-chemical, bacterial and phytoplankton study, and 8 for the zooplankton and the ichthyoplankton studies. 21 stations were sampled during June to September 1989 for heavy metals. The sedimentary and macrozoobenthic characterization were made during May/July 1989 where 29 stations were sampled. The results have shown that some physico-chemical parameters (total suspended solids, dissolved oxygen, oils, lead and mercury) were higher than those refer in the Portuguese quality standards; equally the bacterial parameters are above the Portuguese quality standards but only at some stations. The planktonic component (phyto, zoo and ichthyoplankton) was stressed, with low diversity indices. The benthic communities were poor in species. Those areas presented organic enrichment and, in extreme cases, practically no species were sampled. These results point to a disturbed area.
