Studies of the most important Portuguese squid species (long-finned squid and short-finned squid) were carried out, from 1989 onwards, in order to acquire information on population biology (distribution; abundance; population structure; sex-ratio; maturation process), geographic variation (by morphometrical and meristical analysis) and pattern of fisheries (data on landings and catch effort by area/season and temporal trends). The dataset gathered for this Project includes commercial catches/landings values, together with information on samples, randomly chosen from a pre- defined pool of fishing stations from R/V 'Mestre Costeiro' and R/V 'Noruega' survey cruises. Earlier information (from 1981 until 1989) was collected on a rather irregular basis.
