Description
Summary

The Department of Earth Sciences has carried out research into marine chemistry, geochemistry of ocean sediments, and chemistry of marine aerosols for many years. Data collection has been carried out in the North Sea, the Irish Sea, the North Atlantic, the Indian Ocean and the Arabian Sea. The prime areas of current interest include the elemental geochemistry of oceanic sediments, trace metal pollution in fluvial, estuarine and coastal sediments, the chemistry of marine aerosols and rain waters, the degradation and fates of organic pollutants in the marine environment, and metal speciation in the marine environment. This latter includes field studies in open oceanic and coastal conditions and in estuaries. New methods have been developed specifically to determine trace metal concentrations as well as their speciation in sea water. The speciation of copper, zinc, aluminium and iron is currently being investigated.
