Description
Summary

The collection is made up of reports coded SHIP from voluntary observing vessels (VOV) of different countries. The times of observations are: 0000Z, 0600Z, 1200Z and 1800Z. The quality control of this information is practically non existent. The observations are performed at the point where the vessels happen to be at the aforementioned hours. The number of observations filed every day is highly variable, but may be estimated at between 200 and 400. At some centres, such as the Program of Marine Climatology of the Directorate General for Ports, the number of reports filed is much higher and go back to when the observation programme first started.
