Description
Summary

Since 1971 the Oceanographic Centre of the Canary Islands of the Spanish Institute of Oceanography has been carrying out a general study of plankton at a permanent station situated 5 miles to the East of Santa Cruz de Tenerife with a depth of 1,200 metres. The absence of some data is due to the fact that the station could not be manned during certain periods. Thus, a total of 5 cycles was studied during the 1970-90 period. Since 1979, new studies were carried out at another permanent station, similar to the first, situated to the SW of Tenerife. As a contrast to these two studies, a coastal station was set up in 1975 in the Bay of Antequera, with a depth of only 15 metres.
