The sanitary condition of the area was determined by the counts of micro-organisms indicating faecal pollution: Choliphorms, Escherichia Coli, Faecal Streptococus. The study was completed with the total number of sulphite-reducing bacteria and anaerobics. Gauze was used to detect pathological micro-organisms: Salmonella, Vibrio, Staphilococus which are directly responsible for enteric diseases. Samples were water and gauze for the most affected areas at 9 points of the port of Arrecife, both at high and low tide.
