Description | |
Summary | The data set comprises moored current meter measurements made around the Faroe Islands in 1986 and 1987 together with CTD and surface measurements. North of the Faroe Islands current measurements were made at six locations, three close to the Iceland Faroe front and three north of it (record duration 7 to 19 days). South of the Faroe Islands measurements were made in the Faroe Bank Channel (record duration 150 to 350 days). In 1988 two further moorings were deployed for 3 days each. 88 CTD profiles were collected in 1987, and a SeaSoar survey was carried out. Some XBTs were used and shipborne Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) measurements were carried out. In September 1991, a further cruise, whose primary aim was to gather in situ data for calibration and validation of measurements made by sensors on the then recently launched ERS-1 satellite, was undertaken. The measurements were made in a triangular region to the east and north of the Faroes, two side of the triangle being coincident with the ground track of the satellite. A mixture of buoy and shipboard meteorological, wave, sea surface temperature, current and hydrographic data were collected. |
