Description | |
Summary | BRIDGE is a research programme planned by a consortium of British geologists, geophysicists, geochemists, mathematicians, and marine biologists, and administered through the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). It is investigating the processes that operate during the creation of new ocean crust at mid-ocean ridges, and the biological ecosystems associated with them. The BRIDGE Science Plan is carefully structured to focus progressively on four different and contrasted sections of mid-ocean ridge, starting at the regional scale and progressing to detailed work on individual volcanic hot spring systems on the ocean floor. Technological development accompanies the science programme, and will lead to new capabilities for sea floor exploration and experiments. Data collected using 'BRIDGET' and the Oregon State University ZAPS-sled (comprises a CTD-nephelometer-transmissometer array) includes temperature, salinity and transmittance. Water samples have been collected using a rosette sampler for determinations of manganese, helium, methane, silicate. In addition, samples were taken for joint microbiological and geochemical particle studies, and for bacterial counts and DNA extraction. Sidescan sonar images of the seabed have been collected and core samples have been taken. |
