Description
Summary

Within the project 'A survey of the demersal resources of the Mediterranean' (code 203) which began in 1990 and lasted for two years, the Oceanographic Institute of the Balearic Islands has proposed the continuity of the survey on the pink shrimp 'Aristeus antennatus' (Risso, 1816). The pink shrimp is one of the most important species in fishing resources. Although the volume of captures is not that high, it does in fact attain a very high economic value. It represents approximately 7-8 per cent of total fishing, and is situated among the top three or four species in terms of sales value. The existence of voids in the knowledge of its biology, as well as of its habitat and customs (it can suddenly disappear from a fishing ground without any apparent reason), makes it necessary to pursue the biological study of this resource with the purpose of evaluating the pink-shrimp fisheries in the Spanish Mediterranean.
