The different fractions of nutrients are simulated on different model grids for the North Sea. The model grid resolution varies from 1x1 km (near-shore) to 16x16 km (off-shore). The model input consists of emissions from the major rivers entering the North Sea, boundary conditions and emissions from dumping sites and atmospheric deposition. The model processes are based on the different processes of the nutrient cycle (e.g. mineralization, nitrification, autolyse and uptake by algae). Residual as well as inter-tidal currents are simulated with a hydrodynamic model. The model is calibrated against the yearly averaged in-situ measurements of Rijkswaterstaat (DONAR database).
