Description
Summary

The aim of the international programme was to increase the knowledge of the mechanism of the water exchange in the Baltic Deep Water and in particular to study the stagnation mechanism of the deep basins. Data were collected on 20 cruises at approximately 37 stations. The Baltic Year was subdivided into periods of 3 weeks length. During each of these periods one ship was responsible for the measuring programme. During the first week chemical-biological investigations were made at as many of the standard stations in the Baltic proper as possible. The second week repeated bathythermographic measurements were made every hour and hydrographic casts were made 8 times a day in The Gotland Deep (BY15). The third week was free for everybody to complete the international programme or to carry out any kind of special investigations. Participating countries: Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Poland, FRG, GDR and USSR. The data has been quality controlled.
