The Trieste ITTS tide gauge station has been in operation since the last century. The station is instrumented with a conventional stilling well type gauge with a paper tape recorder. Since 1987, the station has been equipped with a digital recording system, sampling time 1 hour, whilst still maintaining the graphic recorder. Historical data have different sampling time resolutions: - from 1890 to 1904 annual mean sea levels; - from 1905 to 1939 monthly mean sea levels; - from 1939 onwards, hourly sea level data have been stored on magnetic diskettes at the ITTS Data Bank. All ITTS tidal records are referred to a datum (Zero Istituto Talassografico, ZIT) since 1919. The original data are continuously collected, analyzed and worked up by ITTS. The data are fully quality controlled for spikes and spurious data to produce monthly tidal components, residuals (meteorological component) and daily maximum and minimum heights of sea levels. The same data, up to 1974, have been published also by FAGS (1976).
