Description
Summary

During the austral summer 1989-90 and in the framework of the Italian National Research Program in Antarctica coordinated by ENEA, the third geophysical survey was conducted in the waters surrounding Antarctica, with the systematic collection of seismic reflection, gravity and magnetic data. Some seismic refraction profiles have been acquired in cooperation with the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The survey was conducted in three different areas: the Antarctic Peninsula, the South Pacific Ocean and the Ross Sea. In the Ross Sea the data have been collected with the following sampling parameters: Coverage = 3000 % Sample Rate = 4 ms Shot Interval = 50 m Streamer Length = 3000 m Streamer Depth = 12 m Group Interval = 25 m Number of Groups = 120 Record Length = 14 sec Air-Guns: - Total Volume = 45.16 l - Pressure = 140 bar - Depth = 6 m The third part of the survey has been dedicated to the Ross Sea area, where seismic refraction data have been collected using sonobuoys. Four sites of particular interest were occupied and the data acquisition system was modified as follows: Coverage = 6000 % Sample Rate = 2 ms Shot Interval = 25 m Streamer Length = 3000 m Streamer Depth = 12 m Group Interval = 25 m Number of Groups = 120 Record Length = 6 sec Air-Guns: - Total Volume = 22.5 l - Pressure = 140 bar - Depth = 6 m A total amount of 2,562 km of seismic refraction profiles and 31 datasets has been collected.
