Description
Summary

An annual study (December 1991-December 1992) is being conducted at 4 sites in the Ligurian Sea: Arenzano, Capoleto, Varazze and Monterosso. The first three sites lie in an area in which an accidental petroleum spill occurred in April 1991. The last is being used as a reference site. One of the aims of the study is to check on flinching of the Posidonia Oceanica prairies at the boundary facing the open sea due to the hydrocarbon pollution. The 'Balisage' method was applied to this boundary. The density and colonization rate of the prairies along with the phenology and epiphytism are being studied through in situ countings and collection of samples.
